We’ve featured the 190E Evolution II a few times in the past couple months. Today we have another one that takes an already pretty bonkers car and turns the dial up a few more notches. This Evo II in California is another one of the 502 made that found it’s way stateside and of course, carries a mid-six figure price tag. But like I hinted at, this one has a few extras that turns the car into a pseudo DTM car for the streets. So let’s check this rare W201 with a little extra something FOR DETAILS: 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E Evolution II on eBayYear: 1990Model: 190E Evolution IIEngine: liter inline-4Transmission: 5-speed manualMileage: 3,021 miPrice: $289,000he motorsport rivalry between Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s culminated in to what we call a legend today, the 190E Evolution II or better known as the “Evo II.” In 1984, Mercedes introduced the 190E which was an innovative compact premium sport sedan for its time. The 190E dominated the segment it introduced for two years until BMW answered with the E30 3-series based M3 in 1986. In 1988, Mercedes upgraded the to but the increased performance was still not enough to challenge the BMW M3. In 1989, Mercedes introduced the “Evo I” with further refinement of the previous motor and chassis but still could not clinch the German Touring Car Masters (DTM).In 1990, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 190E Evolution II to incredible fan fare at the 1990 Geneva International Motor show. Building upon the “Evo I” from the previous year, the “Evo II” received drastic aerodynamics upgrades—widened fenders, aggressive side skirts, a large adjustable rear wing, and a rear window spoiler. The body kit was shaped by Dr. Richard Eppler of Stuttgart University, who was an expert in aerodynamics. Dr. Eppler wind tunnel tested his design and was able to increase downforce and lower the drag coefficient to heart of the car is the engine and it was developed in collaboration with Cosworth and AMG. The “Evo II” engine was based on an even shorter stroke unit of the previous “Evo I” engine and included the AMG PowerPack option. The PowerPack option came with hotter camshafts, a larger diameter throttle body, more aggressive ignition and fuel management as well as optimization of the intake and exhaust systems. Power output increased from 197 hp to 235 hp, the redline increased from 7,250 rpm to 7,700 rpm, and torque increased from 176 lb ft to 181 lb ft. The same full SLS suspension found in the “Evo I” that allowed the vehicle ride height to be adjusted from an interior switch was also fitted to the “Evo II.”Only 502 examples of the “Evo II” were produced for homologation in compliance with Group A racing in the DTM. 500 of these examples were painted exclusively in blue black metallic with the production number indicated on the shift knob. The remaining two factory cars, number 501 and 502, were painted astral silver. Experts says that all 500 examples were sold before its unveil at the Geneva Motor “Evo II” had its DTM racing debut on the North Loop of the Nürburgring in June 1990. After 6 years of being overshadowed by BMW, Audi, and Ford in DTM racing; Mercedes finally found success with the “Evo II” with driver Kurt Thiim winning third place in the 1990 DTM championship. In 1991, Mercedes continued their success with the “Evo II” by winning the manufacturer title. In 1992, Mercedes went on to sweep the manufacturer and drivers titles by winning a total of 16 races. Kalus Ludwig won the 1992 DTM Championship ahead of Kurt Thiim and Bernd Schneide—all three driving a 190 E Evolution “Evo II” really lives up to its namesake; starting with the evolving into the Evolution I and eventually evolving into the championship winning Evolution II. It was Mercedes’ desire to evolve that produced such an iconic and beautiful machine we now admire and love Japanese collector purchased this car back in the 90’s but felt he needed to continue the same spirit of evolution that Mercedes started. A regular “Evo II”s performance was not enough for this wealthy individual, and since money was not an issue he commissioned to build an “Evo II” DTM spec race car for the do not do this car justice as the attention to detail is meticulous when inspected in person. To increase the engine performance, he opted for upgrades like custom exhaust manifold, custom full exhaust, custom intake manifold, custom header tank, custom aluminum surge tank, individual throttle bodies, larger injectors, lightweight aluminum pulley, fuel cell system, and a Motec engine management system. The interior was transformed to a more race car appropriate setting with a roll cage, Recaro racing seats, kill switches, new gauges, and a quick release AMG steering suspension and brakes were also upgraded to increase handling performance. Brembo Monobloc 6 piston brakes are fitted in the front and 4 piston brakes and fitted in the rear for incredible stopping performance. The chassis is stiffened with an underbody brace in the front, driver side, and passenger side. Larger metal suspension links were added to the front and rear. The iconic OZ Racing wheels are authentic and come in a staggered setup of 18× in the front and 18×10 in the details of the car include a DTM style mono windshield wiper, deleted fuel door, deleted sunroof, battery relocated to the trunk, and HID headlights. The “Evo II” is already a rare car with only 502 examples produced, but this 1 of 1 custom “Evo II” DTM spec race car for the road is truly a Mercedes collectors holy of DTM spec upgrades:Engine:Motec Engine Management SystemLarger Injector SystemAluminum Injection BracketCustom Exhaust ManifoldCustom Full ExhaustIndividual Throttle BodiesCustom Intake ManifoldCustom Aluminum Large Size Surge TankCustom Header TankCustom Aluminum RadiatorAluminum PulleyLarger Dual Cooling FansFuel Cell SystemInterior:Front Leather Recaro Pole Position SPG Racing SeatsRear Leather Recaro Sport SeatsWillans Racing HarnessAMG Racing Suede Steering Wheel with Quick ReleaseRoll CageSuspension & Brakes:Brembo Monobloc 6 Piston Front and 4 Piston Rear Big Brake KitLarger Metal Suspension LinksDriver Side and Passenger Side Under-Body BracesFront Under-Body BraceWheels & Tires:Authentic OZ Racing Wheels (18× Fronts / 18×10 Rears)Advan Neova TiresAdditional Upgrades:DTM Style Mono Windshield WiperDeleted Fuel DoorDeleted SunroofCustom Driver and Passenger Side MirrorsBattery Relocated to the TrunkHID HeadlightsSerious Inquiries OnlyThe modification list on this car is pretty exhausting for a car that was damn good when it left the factory. The (very wealthy) owner who did these tweaks must of had a pretty strong passion to own a DTM car that you could run on the street. Nothing was left untouched on this car but at first glance you’d never really know it aside from the giant DTM inspired wheels. But once you really start poking around you see this car has a whole other level to it. I’m seriously impressed how well everything was modified and the level of detail that went into it. The only thing I don’t love is the full roll cage because that means any kind of driving over 10 mph will have you throwing a full helmet on so it kind of takes all the fun out of a street legal DTM car. Otherwise, the suspension, brakes, extensive engine modification, everything on this car is really well the price is $289,000. And this might sound nuts, but it’s a really good number seeing as what others are asking for these cars that don’t have a fraction of the money sunk into it. Unless the owner bought this car new, he’s probably taking a loss on it given the amount of parts and their cost. So if you are looking for a DTM play toy, this is probably your best option — if you can spend almost $300,000 without feeling it.– Andrew

Zrodzony z intensywnej rywalizacji z BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz 190E był wynikiem współpracy ze słynną firmą inżynieryjną Cosworth. To właśnie Brytyjczycy wzięli standardowy, 8-zaworowy silnik o pojemności 2,3 litra i modernizując go, udoskonalili. Podwozie W201 zostało wzmocnione przez większe stabilizatory, twardsze tuleje, mechanizm różnicowy o ograniczonym poślizgu, szybciej reagujące amortyzatory i krótsze przełożenie układu kierowniczego. Getrag dostarczył pięciobiegową skrzynię w układzie dogleg, aby zapewnić szybki i łatwy wybór biegów. Dokumenty samochodu potwierdzają wyposażenie w podgrzewane fotele, czujnik temperatury zewnętrznej, elektrycznie sterowany szyberdach, tylne głośniki, poduszkę powietrzną i radio. 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E Evolution II Ryan Merrill ©2021 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s Link: AMELIA ISLAND | LOT 202 1990 MERCEDES-BENZ 190 E EVOLUTION II $350,000 – $400,000 USD $379,000 USD | Sold United States | Amelia Island, Florida 22 May 2021 Chassis No. WDB2010361F735138 Serial No. 106/500 Documents US Title VIEW HISTORY FILE A DTM homologation special from Mercedes-Benz No. 106 of 502 examples produced Delivered new to Germany Acquired by the consignor in 2001 then showing 1,500 km (~930 mi) Under 27,500 km (~17,100 mi) presently indicated 238 hp, 16-valve inline-four engine by Cosworth; five-speed Getrag manual transmission Born from intense competition with BMW’s superb M3, the Mercedes-Benz 190 E was the result of a partnership with famed engineering firm Cosworth. The W201 chassis was beefed up with larger anti-roll bars, harder bushings, limited-slip differential, quicker dampers, and a faster steering ratio. Getrag provided the five-speed dogleg gearbox to ensure fast and easy gear selection. Cosworth then took the standard 8-valve engine and fitted a light alloy cylinder head, dual-overhead cams, and four valves per cylinder. Continued development bumped engine displacement to liters in 1988. The initial “Evo” model overhauled the platform into a thoroughbred racer by installing a tuned version of the motor, larger brakes, and improved tires. Further enhancements included a wider front and rear track, stiffer adjustable suspension, and revised bodywork. For the Evolution II model, the engineers squeezed out an impressive 238 horsepower. Visually, the true highlight of the Evo II is the aero kit that features a towering rear spoiler, imposing fender flairs, and an even more aggressive front splitter. This Evo II offered here is the 106th of 502 built; it was delivered new to Mercedes-Benz Frankfurt in April 1990. Clad in the standard shade of Blauschwarz Metallic over Anthracite leather, this example’s build record indicates the fitment of heated seats, an external temperature sensor, power sunroof, rear speakers, airbag-equipped steering wheel, and a Mercedes radio. Acquired by the consignor in 2001 then showing 1,500 kilometers (~930 miles) and exported to Chile, this well-preserved Evo II presently shows under 27,500 kilometers (~17,100 miles) at time of cataloging. This particular example wears an additional pair of optional spoilers: a fixed front wing and rear decklid spoiler below the larger rear wing. This Evo II has been carefully preserved in climate-controlled storage and fastidiously maintained by authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers. The consignor states that car was taken for regular drives during their ownership to ensure proper mechanical function. This Evo II was professionally detailed and ceramic coated while within the consignor’s care, which was most recently provided in March 2020. With growing interest in historic motorsport has come renewed interest from collectors in the cars that were homologated in order to allow some of the greatest cars of all time to go racing in the first place. This Evolution II, now offered from twenty years of fastidious ownership by one owner, ranks among the most visually striking of all the homologation specials and warrants pride of place in any garage.

The 190e Evo II was the ultimate road going version of the homologated DTM race car, famously driven by a young Ayrton Senna in the late 1980s. Under pressure form BMW's M3, Merc's 2.5 litre W201 E-class was modified into the 1989 Evo I, making way for the bespoilered and bewinged Evo II in 1990.
Mercedes-Benz | Mercedes-AMG Click to rate this post[Total: 1 Average: 5]It was 1990 when the Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II made its debut. The model came with a 16-valve four-cylinder engine that developed 232 horsepower. That power plant made the car accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Wood inserts and black leather seats made up a pretty plush atmosphere inside the sports car. “The black leather upholstery still smells new, without any pronounced signs of wear”, the ad reads for a car with chassis number WDB 2010361F738165. The Benz has a sunroof and there are heated seats onboard. The odometer reads only 14,424 kilometers, translating into little over 8,960 miles. But despite the low mileage, it’s far from being in Concours condition. Once the hood pops up, you can see the insulation was torn. It still sports the original 17-inch wheels fitting the flared fenders. At the rear, there is a massive wing that obviously still makes it stand out almost three decades after it drove through the factory gate. Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II – one of 502 This example is number 389 of the 502 ever built for the homologation of the race car. The first physical owner was a lady from Belgium, who made the purchase in Germany. She serviced the car in a Mercedes dealer near Aachen. Documents reveal that it required some work in its early years. It had previously been registered under the ownership of a company, as shown by the certificate of conformity, dated April 1993. The woman eventually sold it in 1997 and the new owner, Baudouin Lempereur, kept it until the present day. Even though he rarely used it, he decided to put in an Indianapolis steering wheel. It still sports the colors that were fashionable back in the early 1990s. Artcurial estimated this Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II between 100,000 and 150,000 euros, which would be between 109,140 and 163,710 American dollars. The car is going under the hammer at the Retromobile Artcurial on March 18.
The 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II - celebrated its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1990. SOLD No collection of classic car specials is complete without EVO II. The car owes its iconic status not only to its racing heritage, but also to its fantastic driving performance. The Mercedes-Benz 190E was created during the intense competition with BMW M3 and it was a result of collaboration with Cosworth, a famous engineering company. It was the British who took the standard 8-valve engine and upgraded it to obtain better results. In case of Evolution II, they achieved an impressive power of 232hp. 190E Evolution II is the most wanted version of 190 W201, which became a symbol of the turn of the 1980's and 1990's. Based on the first compact Mercedes, it is one of the most successful car designs in the DTM series, in which Mercedes won the master title three years in a row. Only 502 vehicles of this generously gifted racing monster have been produced.
